Overview of the objectives, priorities, and strategies of research and training activities of the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) prepared for the first meeting of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR) which was held during CGIAR International Centers Week October-November 1996. The paper was prepared by JIRCAS Director General Nobuyoshi Maeno. The purpose of JIRCAS was to promote sustainable development of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in the developing world through collaboration in research programs with organizations and institutions in developing countries.The paper was an input to GFAR discussions leading to a Declaration and Action Plan for Global Partnerships in Agricultural Research. It was intended to provide insights on partnerships and collaboration from the perspective of an advanced research institution (ARI).
